The news business now sees glimpses of a new “golden era” thanks to a curiosity-seeking entrepreneur. The recent, bold move made by Jeff Bezos, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Amazon, to buy The Washington Post means BIG changes are coming.

Bezos has been in Washington, DC, this week meeting with Post managers and staff.  His clear message to his new company:

  • Put readers, not advertisers first.
  • Don’t write to impress each other.
  • Most importantly, don’t be boring.

In a simple but profound way, Bezos laid out his vision of the future for the newspaper.

Bezos was quoted in The Washington Post saying…

“The death knell for any enterprise is to glorify the past, no matter how good it was …    All businesses need to be forever young … If your customer base ages with you as a company, you’re Woolworth’s.”

Bezos’ deep curiosity, adaptive mindset, courage and confidence will help The Washington Post (and an industry) move into the future.  What’s even more refreshing is how he does it – with confidence and humility. Bezos’ innovative, risk taking (but patient) leadership makes him our GROUNDED Leader of the Week.
