For four years Bob McDonald led P&G through some difficult times. On May 23, 2013, he resigned for slower than desired growth and was replaced by his predecessor, A.G. Lafley. Over the years, we have spent time with Bob and A.G. discussing their leadership philosophies. Both are healthy leaders.

In Bob’s case, he was a grounded leader before his departure and is a grounded person afterwards. He likely just got caught in the winds of change, as so many leaders. Outstanding leaders get eased out of their jobs all the time for legitimate reasons and for factors beyond their control. Bob’s departing message in the Wall Street Journal says it all:

“When we got to a point where too much attention becomes a distraction, it’s time to change that dynamic.”
