This week started with the Super Bowl and is ending with the opening of the Socihi 2014 Winter Olympics. It is only fitting that a sports leader is our Grounded Leader of the Week.
Pete Carroll, NFL Super Bowl XLVIII winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks, is known for his laid back coaching style, and often for having too much fun. A recent Forbes article claims his leadership style is distinguished by his crazy big ambitions, his unusual optimism (he has been undeterred by failures and being fired, twice), his rock-star persona and his positive-thinking.
Feedback on his leadership style sounds like this … “One of the most impressive parts of Coach Carroll’s leadership is that he’s remarkably consistent in terms of attitude and approach, while also never being boring or predictable. He keeps his coaches and players on their toes … [And this] fosters an eagerness about working and learning.” (Forbes, 1-30-14)
Carroll is an exemplar of emotional health in terms of his resilience and positive emotions. He clearly impacts his team in both ways. This is why Pete Carroll is our Grounded Leader of the Week.
Key Lesson: A leader with strong emotional roots is not derailed by unpredictability, realizes that they don’t know everything and fully expect that bad things happen. So when it does, they manage their emotions, monitor how others are faring, and do their best to make good decisions.
